St Mathew | Corfu
This villa occupies a secluded plot at the southwestern coast of Corfu, close to the lagoon of Korission, a protected area of awe-inspiring beauty. Surrounded by olive trees and wildflowers, the villa's outdoor areas are utterly open to the setting, making the landscape feel like an extension of the terraces. Surfaces built out of local stone add a rugged, natural ambience to the low-rise structure, echoing both its connection to the setting and the hard geometric lines of the home's architecture.
The outdoor spaces, designed to be as comfortable and livable as the indoor ones, include pergola-shaded lounge and dining spots with views that convey a soul-soothing calmness, enclosed patios that allow absolute privacy and a generous swimming pool -a striking patch of blue that contrasts sharply with the stark Mediterranean landscape.
The interior is designed to blur the physical boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The villa's rooms are spacious, open-plan and angled in different ways to enjoy different views. The home's relationship to the surroundings is pivotal here, too. The materials are natural -stone, concrete and wood are used throughout the house- and the windows massive, to let the landscape in. All the rooms open to verandas and terraces and have access to the garden and the sandy beach below.
